White Bigfoot in New York

A case study of white Bigfoot sightings in New York.

BFRO report 1525 happened in September 1997 in Greece, NY. Witnesses describe a 7-foot-tall creature with white hair and a slim build retreating from a distance of about 100 feet. Other sightings of this creature reportedly took place around the same time in this area.

BFRO report 11726 took place in February 1998 in Wellsville, NY. Witnesses observed a 6-to-7-foot-tall creature with grayish-white hair walking away from them as they walked along a wooded trail.

BFRO report 26566 occurred in September of 2003 in Wolcott, NY. Witnesses viewed a 6 1/2-to-7-foot-tall creature with white hair and a thin and lanky build. The creature was observed 200 yards away ducking and moving around while looking at the humans observing it.

  • The first thing that stands out is the white hair. This has been reported in other Bigfoot sightings in other areas; however it is not a common trait as the vast majority of sightings are of a black or brown creature.
  • A study of 89 reports concluded an average Bigfoot height of about 8 feet. The subjects in all three reports above describe an average height of under 7 feet.
  • Two of the three reports mentioned a slim, thin, and lanky build. The other report did not mention build. Bigfoot are often described as muscular, robust, and wide.
  • In each report the Bigfoot was retreating immediately, or after looking at the humans looking at it, retreating quickly.

If these sightings were scattered across a large area or were reported in different states or across large time spans, they probably wouldn't have caught my attention. But in addition to the above physical similarities in each report, attributes that are not generally reported when describing a Bigfoot, they are in a close geographic range and within a short time span of each other. Using Heron's formula there is about 1,600 square miles within the triangular boundary of the sightings locations (see map below).  The longest distance as the crow flies is 94 miles from report 11726 to report 26566. This all happened in a 6-year span.

I spent hours reading Bigfoot reports from New York State and neighboring areas of Pennsylvania and could not find any reports of a white Bigfoot. It was difficult finding reports of a Bigfoot of any color under 7 feet tall. I am of the opinion that these reports are of a real Bigfoot and are of the same creature. The odds of there being multiple short stature, thin Bigfoot with white hair in a close geographic proximity over a short set of years doesn't seem likely.

These reports can offer a small glimpse into the often-asked question of: How many Bigfoot are there? The late great Dr. Grover Krantz once hypothesized that 2,000 Bigfoot may exist in the Pacific Northwest alone. The late great Dr. Jeff Meldrum offered a lower estimate saying there are 200 black bear for every 1 Bigfoot. With a black bear population in the U.S. at about 400,000 that equals 2,000 total Bigfoot. I think that the 2,000-population total for Bigfoot is a high end estimate. I would estimate a population of around 800-1,000, with individuals being highly mobile (as seen with the white NY bigfoot) and the same individual accounting for multiple sightings across multiple areas, tricking us into thinking Bigfoot is more widespread than it actually is. The ecological impact of thousands upon thousands of huge omnivorous creatures would be far more apparent than what it is, unless those huge creatures were few in number.
